REPLACEMENT OF TRADERS AT MBI SQUARE TO MBI TERRACE
The hawker issue at Dataran MBI has started since 3 years ago where at that time there were only 3 hawkers selling food and drinks.
MBI Square has become an attraction for the general public since the decorative lights were installed and also attracts the presence of unlicensed hawkers especially on holidays.
The Council is always aware of the problems of traders and always tries to help small traders run their business.
For information, MBI has received more than 30 complaints through MBI's MyAduan system since the beginning of 2024 related to "Car Boot Sales" activities in front of MBI's own office building and until now only verbal warnings have been issued.
MBI takes the approach of postponing enforcement action in order to give hawkers a chance to earn a living, however the situation is getting out of control and immediate action needs to be taken.
Therefore the management of the Council which has met 3 times decided to relocate the hawkers in front of Dataran MBI to MBI Terrace since that area is the most suitable and to avoid various problems and accusations thrown at the Council in dealing with the issue of dumping of unlicensed traders in front of MBI own
The Council as a local authority needs to act fairly in solving the problems of the city's citizens harmoniously (win-win situation).
At the Business Engagement session with traders that was held on 6 December 2024, traders were given information about the Council's proposal to place 44 traders at MBI Terrace.
MBI Terrace will be gradually improved in terms of lighting and other facilities so that traders can do business safely and add attraction to visitors.
The traders will also be licensed, at the same time making it easier for them to obtain help/support from various agencies such as the Perak State Entrepreneur Secretariat (STeP), the Business Group Economic Fund (TEKUN Nasional), Commercial Banks and others related especially from the aspect of financial financing.
Starting with 10 traders in August 2024, the number of traders continued to increase and at the beginning of November 2024 the list of 44 traders was recorded by the Council. The number of traders continues to increase and was notified in the third week of November as many as 70 traders. The latest data on December 15, 2024 from dealer representatives is 80 dealers.
The increase in the number of traders continues to increase and complaints related to traffic congestion and other related complaints continue to increase. The placement action of the original dealers is the best solution so far.
It was also informed that the council also took note of the increased number of 36 traders and the council will take the following steps :-
1. The list of 36 traders, if any, will be accepted by the Council as a reserve list of names to fill the vacancy, if the one given the offer from among the 44 traders rejects or does not accept;
2. The list of traders will also be checked to be given an offer at the location of the site or stall of the food court or an empty business site if any;
3 MBI, If the situation allows, the council will work on a suitable location for resettlement within the administrative area of MBI;
4. The Council can also help manage the placement of these additional 'Car Boot Sales' dealers to the location of private sales sites around MBI to help simplify matters, for example the location of the parking lot of the supermarket complex, strategic locations of public focus if all parties agree in a 'win-win situation'.
