FOCUS GROUP DISCUSSION (FGD) WITH UNITED NATIONS INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION (UNIDO)

FUNDING FOR KINTA RIVERINE BOTANICAL GARDEN PROJECT

7 OGOS 2025 - Ipoh City Council (MBI) organised a two-day Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), a United Nations (UN) agency headquartered in Vienna, Austria.

The session was facilitated by Sooksiri Chamsuk from UNIDO Bangkok Sub-Regional Office and coordinated by the MBI Donut Economy Secretariat Unit. The main objective of the FGD was to discuss climate change issues and to gather relevant input and proposed solutions for the city of Ipoh.

Among those present were MBI Chief WHIP Clr Dato' Mazlan Abdul Rahman, Clr Wong Kar Keat, Councillors, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) President Dato’ Chua and MBI Department Heads.

TPr Dr Zulqarnain gave a briefing on the Doughnut Economy City initiative, while LAr Meor Abdullah Zaidi presented the Ipoh City Landscape Master Plan. Representatives from the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM), namely ILAM President LAr Dr Atiah and LAr Dr Ivan Fong, also shared preliminary proposals on nature-based solutions and flood mitigation efforts in the Kinta River basin within the city area.

Among the agencies present were the State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN), Perak State Development Corporation (PKNP), Department of Environment (JAS), Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), Malaysian Meteorological Department, Tourism Perak, Perak Water Resources Management Board, PASAK (TVET), Perak Women Development Secretariat (represented by Jamilah), and several other state agencies.

On the first day, a video conference session was held with the UNIDO office in Vienna, involving Rashmi Jawahar and Stefan Pahl from the UNIDO Technical Unit, to evaluate the project proposals from MBI.

2. Impact-Based Early Warning Systems for Adaptive Planning;
3. Nature-Based Solutions and Community Adaptation for Tourism Resilience;
4. Resilient Tourism Supply Chains, Investment Readiness, and Knowledge for Upscaling.
