PRESENTATION CEREMONY OF GRADE A CERTIFICATION
IPOH, 10 NOVEMBER 2025 – Ipoh Mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah presented the Grade A Premises Rating and Evaluation Certificate to Abul Kalam Sahul Hamid, Manager of Begum’s Restaurant & Café, Canning 2 Business Centre this morning.
Also present were Clr. Dato' Mazlan Abd. Rahman, MBI Chief WHIP Clr. Wong Kar Keat and heads of departments from MBI.
The event was part of the ongoing efforts by the Food Safety and Quality Unit, MBI Public Health and Municipal Services Department, to ensure that hygiene and food safety levels of licensed premises are always at the highest standards.
MBI conducts regular monitoring of all licensed food premises under its administration. This step aims to expand Grade A Certification recognition to restaurant, café and food stall operators throughout the Ipoh City Council administrative area.
As of October 2025, 1,354 food premises have achieved Grade A Certification out of a total of 3,600 licensed food premises. This is equivalent to 37.6% of licensed food premises.
MBI is committed to increasing this achievement to 50% by 2026 through the implementation of more comprehensive and routine inspections and grading.
The Grade A Certification is valid for two (2) years from the date of issuance. For premises wishing to renew their certificates, applications can be made at Level 5, Public Health and Municipal Services Department, Ipoh City Council.
Authorised officers will conduct re-inspections based on the Food Premises Evaluation and Grading Form from the Local Government Department, Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT).
Premises must achieve a cleanliness rating of 86% or above to qualify for re-certification. The Grade A assessment takes into account the cleanliness level of the premises and toilets based on the “Clean, Attractive and Fragrant (BMW)” concept. In addition, premises must also provide documentation such as anti-typhoid vaccination records for all food handlers, participation in food handling courses, installation of grease traps, and conduct regular pest control measures.
This recognition provides multiple benefits, including ensuring better hygiene, safety and quality of food, enhancing the image of the local gastronomy industry and attracting domestic and foreign tourists.
Moreover, food premises operators who achieve this standard also contribute to the progress and development of Ipoh City as “The Country’s Main Tourism City 2025”, in line with preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
Ipoh City Council welcomes the participation of all food premises operators to obtain Grade A Certification recognition to ensure the best hygiene and quality of food for the community.
